What does Überstundenabbau mean?
Literally, Überstundenabbau means “reduction of overtime hours” or “clearing the overtime balance”.
It is an alternative to paying out overtime in money: instead of receiving extra wages, the employee is granted time off in lieu (Freizeitausgleich) equivalent to the number of overtime hours worked. These hours are then deducted from the employee’s overtime balance instead of being paid as additional salary.
How does Überstundenabbau work in practice?
1. Accumulating an overtime balance
While overtime is being worked, each additional hour is recorded in the employee’s individual overtime account.
2. Requesting time off in lieu (Freizeitausgleich)
The employee submits a formal request to the employer in order to take compensated time off that corresponds to the number of accumulated overtime hours.
3. Approval and planning
The employer usually agrees to grant this time off, but within the framework of operational needs and according to a mutually agreed work schedule.
4. Deducting the balance
After the time off has been taken, the corresponding number of hours is deducted from the overtime account, reducing the overtime balance accordingly.
Advantages of Überstundenabbau
Rest instead of money:
It gives the employee the opportunity to recover physically and mentally by taking additional time off instead of only receiving extra pay.
Organisational flexibility:
It helps companies to manage workload peaks and quieter periods more effectively without immediately incurring extra wage costs.
Compliance with labour law:
As long as daily and weekly working time does not exceed the legal limits of Section 3 of the Working Time Act (ArbZG) and no permanent excessive overtime is created, this model remains legally compliant.
Difference between Abbau and Auszahlung
Abbau (reduction via time off):
The overtime balance is reduced by granting time off in lieu – you “cash in” your overtime in the form of free time.
Auszahlung (cash payment):
Each overtime hour is compensated with extra pay, calculated according to the employment contract or applicable collective agreement.
Example
If your overtime balance amounts to 10 hours:
Abbau:
You take two days off of 5 hours each (2 × 5 hours). Your overtime balance is then reduced to zero.
Auszahlung:
You receive additional pay for 10 hours of overtime, according to the agreed overtime rate in your contract.
In short:
Überstundenabbau is the process of using up overtime hours through compensated time off, instead of receiving extra money. This often leads to a better work–life balance for employees.
