Why DRL is not enough in fog
DRL (daytime running lights) are designed to make your vehicle more visible to others during daylight. They are not intended to improve your own visibility in fog or at dusk.
Under German law (§ 17 (3) StVO), drivers are required to switch on their low-beam headlights (Abblendlicht) whenever visibility is impaired due to fog, rain or snow. Simply driving with DRL only in such conditions does not fulfil this legal obligation.
Likewise, using only the front fog lights (Nebelscheinwerfer) without low beam is insufficient and does not exempt you from the legal requirement.
What fines can you face?
| Situation | Fine | Points | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driving without low beam in fog | 60 € | 1 point | In fog or comparable poor visibility |
| Using only front fog lights (no Abblendlicht) | 20–35 € | – | Incorrect use without low beam |
| Causing glare or endangering others in fog | up to 90 € | 1 point | Possible extra driving ban or higher fine |
How to avoid a fine
In foggy conditions, always switch on your low-beam headlights (Abblendlicht) immediately.
You may use front fog lights and the rear fog lamp only when visibility drops below 50 m.
In light fog, low beam alone is usually sufficient.
Never rely solely on DRL or fog lights – they do not provide the legally required lighting and will not protect you from penalties.
Conclusion
Continuing to drive in fog with only daytime running lights or the wrong light setup may feel convenient, but it is a clear legal violation and can quickly cost you 60 € plus one demerit point on your driving record.
