Gewerbeanmeldung – Step by step at the Bürgeramt
1. Preparation before your appointment
What do you need before you go?
-
ID card or passport (valid identification document)
-
Your current registered address (Anmeldung / registration certificate)
-
A business name (choose a clear and professional name)
-
A precise description of your activity (Tätigkeitsbeschreibung / description of business activity)
-
The form “Anmeldung eines Gewerbes” (registration of a trade) – you can fill it in beforehand or directly at the office
-
If applicable: special permits (e.g. Handwerkskarte for crafts, health certificate)
-
If you work from your home address: written consent from your landlord or a copy of your rental contract
If your business is a UG or GmbH, you also need:
-
a copy of the articles of association (Gesellschaftsvertrag)
-
an extract from the commercial register (Handelsregisterauszug)
2. Booking an appointment (if a Termin is required)
-
Check whether the Bürgeramt or Gewerbeamt in your city requires an appointment (Terminpflicht).
-
Book the appointment online via your city’s official website (e.g. berlin.de).
-
Some cities also allow online registration or registration by post.
3. Going to the appointment
At the appointment:
-
Arrive on time.
-
Present all the documents listed above.
-
The clerk will fill in the registration form together with you – or will accept the form you have already completed.
4. Paying the fees
-
The registration fee is usually between 20 and 60 euros, depending on the city.
-
Payment is made in cash or by card, depending on what the office accepts.
5. Receiving your Gewerbeschein
-
Immediately after payment, you receive your Gewerbeschein (certificate of business registration).
-
This is the official document proving that you are now officially running a business.
6. What happens after registration?
The following authorities are usually informed automatically:
-
Finanzamt (tax office):
-
A few weeks later you will receive the “Fragebogen zur steuerlichen Erfassung” (questionnaire for tax registration).
-
Once you have returned it, you will be issued your tax number (Steuernummer).
-
-
IHK or HWK:
-
You will receive a notification from the responsible Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) or Chamber of Crafts (HWK).
-
Membership is mandatory in most cases.
-
-
Berufsgenossenschaft (statutory accident insurance association):
-
They may contact you at a later stage.
-
-
Statistical office (Statistisches Amt, sometimes):
-
For statistical purposes only, without direct obligations for you.
-
Important tips
-
Keep digital copies of your Gewerbeschein.
-
Make sure that the description of your activity in the form is clear and precise to avoid tax issues later on.
-
If you provide freelance professional services (Freiberufler), you may not need a Gewerbeanmeldung at all and should instead contact the tax office directly.
