Fire Safety Requirements for Wooden Booths (e.g., Christmas Markets, Seasonal Events)

In Germany, strict fire safety regulations apply to wooden booths. These cover the booths themselves, decorations, and fire extinguishing equipment.

1. Fire Extinguishers

  • At least 1× 6 kg ABC powder extinguisher per booth

  • Location: inside the booth, easily accessible

  • Maintenance: inspection every 24 months by an authorized company (inspection sticker mandatory)

  • For gas or frying: also fire blanket and/or CO₂ extinguisher required

2. Decorations

  • Must be made of flame-retardant materials, minimum class B1 (DIN 4102) or EN 13501-1 equivalent

  • Fabrics (curtains, banners): must be B1

  • Natural branches: not allowed if dry

  • Paper decorations: only if treated with flame retardant (proof required)

  • Lamps: LED only, no high heat output

  • Proof: certificate or product label showing B1 must be available

3. Gas, Electricity, and Heating Devices

  • Electrical devices: GS/CE certified, moisture-protected

  • Radiant heaters or gas heating: only with special permit, prohibited inside closed booths without ventilation

  • Power distribution: via waterproof cable drum with safety switch

4. Access & Escape Routes

  • Emergency exit must be clear, door not locked during operation

  • No boxes or furniture in aisles between booths

  • Escape plan for staff recommended

5. Inspections by Authorities/Fire Department Before the market opens, fire safety inspections may occur. Checks include:

  • Fire extinguisher with inspection seal

  • B1 certificate for decorations

  • Proper electricity and gas setup

  • Clear escape routes and emergency exits
