Benefits of music for children with ADHD

Studies indicate that music therapy can improve attention, reduce hyperactivity and enhance emotional regulation in children with ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder). For example, one study found that music therapy sessions twice a week over a period of three months led to increased serotonin levels and reduced cortisol levels, suggesting improved mood and lower stress (researchgate.net).

Funding options

1. Statutory health insurance (GKV)

  • Music therapy is not part of the standard benefits catalogue covered by statutory health insurance (GKV).

  • However, if music therapy is integrated into an approved psychotherapeutic treatment, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), it may be covered in individual cases.

2. Integration assistance (Eingliederungshilfe)

  • Music therapy can be funded as part of Eingliederungshilfe (integration assistance) for children with mental disabilities or those at risk of developing such disabilities, according to Section 35a of the German Social Code – Book VIII (SGB VIII).

  • The application is submitted to the local Youth Welfare Office (Jugendamt).

3. Digital health applications (DiGA)

  • Certified digital health applications (DiGA) enable the reimbursement of certain digital treatments via statutory health insurance.

  • At present, there are no approved music therapy apps listed as DiGA, but it is advisable to check for updates and new entries in the DiGA directory on a regular basis (c4tbh.org).

Steps to apply

  1. Consult a specialist physician
Arrange an appointment with a specialist (e.g. child and adolescent psychiatrist, paediatrician with ADHD experience) to obtain a detailed assessment of the child’s condition and a written recommendation for music therapy.

  2. Contact the Youth Welfare Office (Jugendamt)
Get in touch with your local Jugendamt to inquire whether music therapy can be funded as part of integration assistance under §35a SGB VIII, and submit the relevant application forms.

  3. Search for certified therapists
Use platforms such as musiktherapie.de or professional associations’ directories to find qualified and certified music therapists, ideally with experience in working with children diagnosed with ADHD.
