Special Medical Treatment Visa: Proof of Financial Coverage

Medical Treatment Visa for Germany – How to Prove Financial Coverage

The medical treatment visa is granted to foreigners seeking specialized healthcare in Germany, whether for emergencies, long-term therapy, or surgical procedures unavailable in their home country. One of the key requirements is proof of full financial coverage (Kostenübernahme).

Who can apply?

  • Anyone with a certified medical report recommending treatment in Germany.

  • Confirmation from a German hospital/clinic with a detailed cost plan.

  • Proof of financial ability to cover all expenses.

What is proof of coverage? A document showing the applicant has or receives funding to cover:

  • Treatment fees

  • Accommodation and housing

  • Daily living expenses

  • Flight tickets and return

  • Health insurance

Three ways to prove coverage:

  1. Direct prepayment to the hospital (Vorkasse):

    • Hospital issues a cost plan.

    • Patient transfers the full amount.

    • Hospital confirms payment and appointment.

    • Strongest and preferred method for embassies.

  2. Official declaration of commitment (§ 68 Residence Act):

    • A resident in Germany signs at the immigration office.

    • Commits to covering all costs.

    • Must have legal residence and sufficient income.

    • Often used when staying with relatives/friends.

  3. International health insurance:

    • Some private insurers issue medical travel policies.

    • Must be valid for entire treatment, cover at least €30,000, issued by recognized provider.

    • Not recommended alone for complex/long-term cases.

Required documents:

  • National visa application form (D)

  • Valid passport

  • Two biometric photos

  • Detailed medical report from home country

  • Invitation/treatment plan from German hospital

  • Proof of financial coverage

  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking, housing)

  • Health insurance covering stay

  • Visa fee (usually €75)

Important notes:

  • Apply at German embassy/consulate in home country.

  • Processing differs for emergencies vs planned treatments, but financial proof is crucial.

  • Visa duration depends on treatment plan, extendable via immigration office.

Conclusion: Proof of coverage is the backbone of the medical treatment visa. Clear, strong documentation ensures approval and reassures authorities that the patient will not burden the public healthcare system.
