Internship Visa (Praktikum) in Germany (§ 15 BeschV): Rules and Practical Details

Internships in Germany are regulated under § 15 Residence Ordinance (BeschV). Requirements vary by duration and purpose.

Types of Internship Visa:

  • Short-term (≤ 90 days): For international students or recent graduates (within 2 years) from recognized universities (ANABIN H+). Not considered regular employment, no ZAV approval needed.

  • Long-term (> 90 days or paid): Requires National Visa Type D (Residence Permit for Praktikum). ZAV approval mandatory, even for unpaid study-related internships. Valid up to 12 months.

Required Documents:

  • National visa application form (Type D) + biometric photos

  • Valid passport

  • Internship contract or institutional confirmation (tasks, hours, salary if any)

  • University certificate or proof of graduation

  • ZAV approval for long/paid internships

  • Travel health insurance (min. €30,000)

  • Proof of accommodation in Germany

  • Financial proof (bank statement or blocked account)

After Arrival:

  • Register at immigration office (Ausländerbehörde) for residence permit

  • Stay limited to internship duration, max. 12 months

  • Work outside internship only with special permit (rare)

Conclusion: ≤ 90 days: Short internship with national or Schengen visa.

90 days/paid: National Visa Type D with ZAV approval.
