Finnish President: Without Trump, Europe wouldn’t have raised defense spending – No marginalization of Europe

Finnish President Alexander Stubb emphasized at the Munich Security Conference that his country strongly supports the transatlantic partnership between Europe and the United States.

He stressed that current disagreements should not undermine achievements, noting that without pressure from US President Donald Trump, European nations would not have increased their defense spending.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Stubb said the present phase reflects changes in transatlantic relations but does not signal collapse, urging not to spoil what is beneficial due to disputes over details.

He affirmed his support for both Europe and the United States, adding that the transatlantic partnership remains the framework for cooperation, now expanding to data, defense, metals, technology, and for Finland, icebreakers.

Stubb acknowledged differences over international institutions, the EU, and climate change, but insisted these do not negate the importance of continued cooperation. He stressed that Europe’s interests require working with Washington as it does with Gulf states.

Responding to claims of a rift, he said disagreements do not concern defense, NATO, or the war in Ukraine, affirming that both sides are “on the same wavelength” in these matters.

He pointed out that Europe’s increase in defense spending to 5% would not have happened without Trump’s pressure, adding that the US administration also played a key role in advancing peace negotiations.

Stubb noted that the essence of current differences is primarily ideological. He explained that the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) approach shapes US foreign policy differently from Europe’s, but he does not see it as alarming.

He added that US national security strategy has shifted priorities, focusing more on regions in the global north and Africa, stressing that the world is in a transitional phase requiring calm handling.
