European Parliament Approves Tougher Asylum Rules

Publication date: 2026-02-10

On Tuesday, the European Parliament definitively adopted two major texts tightening the EU’s migration and asylum policy.

The new measures include an EU-wide list of “safe countries of origin.” Citizens from these countries will be presumed not to need protection and placed into accelerated procedures, raising concerns that individual circumstances could be overlooked and decisions rushed.

The legislation also allows member states to transfer asylum seekers to “safe third countries,” even if these are not their countries of origin. Italy has tested this approach with centers in Albania, though they remain largely empty due to legal challenges and rulings deeming the scheme unconstitutional.
