Good News for Hybrid Car Buyers: Batteries Retain Capacity for Years

Publication date: 2026-02-03

A large-scale analysis by Germany’s ADAC, in cooperation with battery diagnostics company Aviloo, has shown that plug-in hybrid car batteries demonstrate strong durability even after long-term use.

The study was based on more than 28,500 measurements of battery “State of Health” (SOH), which indicates the remaining capacity compared to when the battery was new.

Results revealed that these batteries often retain a significant portion of their original capacity, even after high mileage, boosting confidence among buyers of used hybrid cars when proper testing is carried out.

German experts expect batteries to maintain at least 92% capacity at 50,000 km, 88% at 100,000 km, 84% at 150,000 km, and no less than 80% at 200,000 km.

A sharp drop below these benchmarks may indicate abnormal degradation or cell defects, potentially leading to costly replacements.

Experts recommend that battery testing should be a key step when purchasing a used hybrid car, and buyers should consider demanding additional warranties if results deviate significantly from reference values.

To extend battery life, specialists advise avoiding frequent full charges to 100% or complete discharges, and instead keeping charge levels between 20% and 80%.
