The Einstiegsqualifizierung (EQ) program is a paid training measure funded by the German Federal Employment Agency (Agentur für Arbeit) or the Jobcenter. It serves as a career bridge toward an apprenticeship (Ausbildung) or a permanent job, especially for young people who were not able to enter vocational training or education directly.

What is EQ?
Einstiegsqualifizierung is a practical training placement (a long-term internship) within a German company lasting 6 to 12 months. It aims to:

  • help young people gain real experience in a real workplace environment

  • increase their chances of being accepted later into an apprenticeship (Ausbildung)

  • improve language skills, work discipline, and understanding of German workplace culture

Who can participate?

  • Young people aged 15 to 25

  • Those who have not found a place in an apprenticeship or school

  • Those facing language, educational, or social challenges

  • Refugees or new migrants (depending on an individual decision by the Jobcenter)

Key benefits:
BenefitDetails

  • Monthly allowance (Vergütung): €247 to €262 per month (2025)

  • Social insurance (Sozialversicherung): includes health insurance, pension, and accident insurance

  • Educational and language support: vocational language courses and guidance during the program

  • Official certificate upon completion: considered when applying for an apprenticeship

  • Possible transition into an apprenticeship: some companies move participants directly into an Ausbildung contract after EQ

How do you register for EQ?

  • Talk to your advisor at the Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit

  • They help you find a partner company offering EQ

  • Sign an EQ contract between you and the company

  • Complete the training for 6 to 12 months (daily, part-time or full-time)

  • Receive an evaluation and an official certificate at the end

A real example:
A young refugee could not secure an apprenticeship place as an electrical assistant. He joined an EQ at an electrical company in his city, and after 8 months, the company accepted him as an official apprentice (Ausbildung) trainee.

Important notes:

  • This program is not counted as part of the allowed working days under a student visa, because it is a training measure, not a job.

  • If you receive Bürgergeld, you may be able to continue receiving benefits alongside EQ.

  • Approval from the Jobcenter is required before starting.
