School Readiness Test in Germany (Schulfähigkeit)

What is it?
It is a medical and educational examination carried out by the municipal health office (Gesundheitsamt) for all children before they enter the first grade in primary school (Grundschule).
It is also known as Schuleingangsuntersuchung.

This examination is a mandatory step and is usually conducted about one year before starting school, when the child is around 5–6 years old.

Who conducts the examination?

  • A doctor from the school health service (Kinder- und Jugendärztlicher Dienst).

  • Often accompanied by an educational psychologist or a specialized educator.

What is assessed during the examination?

  1. Cognitive development (kognitive Entwicklung)
    Can the child:

  • count to 10 or more?

  • distinguish colors and shapes?

  • solve simple puzzles?

  • follow instructions with two or three steps?

The child’s ability to focus, pay attention, and understand tasks is measured.

  1. Language development (sprachliche Entwicklung)

  • Does the child speak in understandable sentences?

  • Can the child describe pictures or events?

  • Does the child understand simple questions and answer appropriately?

  • Does the child have a sufficient vocabulary in German?

If German language skills are weak, language support before school starts may be recommended.

  1. Fine motor skills (Feinmotorik)

  • Can the child hold a pencil correctly?

  • Can the child cut paper with scissors?

  • Can the child draw a circle or a simple shape?

These skills are linked to readiness for writing and handling school tools.

  1. Gross motor skills (Grobmotorik)

  • Can the child hop on one foot?

  • Maintain balance while walking on a line?

  • Throw or catch a ball?

This shows the level of muscle coordination and physical development.

  1. General medical examination

  • Hearing and vision: to detect any impairments that may affect learning.

  • Height and weight: to monitor physical growth.

  • Full physical examination: to check heart health, breathing, movement, etc.

  1. Social and emotional maturity (soziale und emotionale Reife)

  • Does the child interact confidently with adults and children?

  • Does the child share play and accept rules?

  • Can the child sit and pay attention for an appropriate period?

The child’s psychological readiness to integrate into a school environment is evaluated.

After the examination:

  • Parents receive an examination report (Schuluntersuchungsbericht) which is also sent to the school.

  • If there are observations (language, behavioral, physical), it may result in:

    • postponing school entry by one year (in special cases), or

    • recommending additional support before school starts.

How can the family prepare?

  • Talk to the child beforehand about the appointment and explain that a doctor wants to play with them and get to know them.

  • Emphasize that the goal is not “pass or fail,” but simply support.

  • Make sure the child is comfortable, eats well, and sleeps well the day before.
