What is Realschule? Its advantages and the opportunities after graduation
What does Realschule mean?
Realschule is one of the secondary schools in Germany within the three-track education system (Hauptschule – Realschule – Gymnasium). It represents the middle path between theoretical academic education and practical, applied education.
It usually runs from grade 5 to grade 10 and qualifies students for the Mittlerer Schulabschluss, also known as the Realschulabschluss, which opens wide doors to vocational training and further education.
Advantages of Realschule
| Advantage | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Balanced education | Combines theoretical and practical subjects with a focus on applied skills |
| Good vocational preparation | Qualifies students directly for Ausbildung or further study |
| Medium/high academic level | Suitable for students who can keep up successfully without the pressure of Gymnasium |
| Fewer students per class | Allows more individualized teaching and special attention for each student |
| Flexibility of pathway | Possible to move later to higher education tracks with good results |
