Writing a Short Research Paper (Hausarbeit): Rules and Formatting

Hausarbeit

A practical guide to writing a short research paper: rules and formatting

What is a Hausarbeit?

A Hausarbeit is an academic term paper (usually between 8–20 pages) that students are required to write at the end of a semester within a specific course. Its purpose is to assess the student’s ability to:

  • conduct systematic research

  • analyse sources

  • build logical arguments

  • use precise academic language

Key steps

1. Choosing a topic (Thema wählen)

  • Choose a topic that fits the course content.

  • It should be clearly defined and not too broad.

  • Discuss your topic with your supervisor/lecturer (Betreuer).

2. Formulating the research question (Fragestellung)

  • Define one main research question that your paper aims to answer.

Example:
“Wie beeinflusst Digitalisierung das Konsumverhalten von Jugendlichen?”
(“How does digitalisation influence the consumption behaviour of young people?”)

3. Literature research (Literaturrecherche)

  • Start with academic sources (books, journal articles, university databases such as JSTOR or SpringerLink).

  • Use APA, MLA or the citation style required by your university.

4. Creating an outline (Gliederung)

  • Draft a preliminary structure for your paper.

For example:

  1. Introduction

  2. Theoretical background

  3. Methodology (if applicable)

  4. Analysis and discussion

  5. Conclusion

  6. References / Bibliography

5. Academic writing (Wissenschaftliches Schreiben)

  • Use formal, objective language.

  • Avoid “I” or “we” in most disciplines.

  • Ensure a clear logical flow between paragraphs and sections.

6. Quoting and referencing (Zitieren & Literatur)

  • Choose one consistent citation style.

Two basic forms of citation:

  • Direct quotation: “…”

  • Indirect quotation / paraphrase: (cf. Author Year: page)

7. Strong conclusion (Fazit)

  • Answer the research question explicitly.

  • Summarise and briefly discuss your findings.

  • Do not introduce new ideas or topics in the conclusion.
