What is a Tierpfleger/in?
(Animal keeper / animal care specialist)
A Tierpfleger/in is a trained professional who cares for and looks after animals in zoos, breeding farms, shelters, boarding facilities or research centres.
They are responsible for the animals’ health, safety and well-being, observe their behaviour and may support training, shows or scientific studies, depending on the workplace.
Dual vocational training (Ausbildung) with a duration of 3 years
Combination of:
Practical training in zoos, shelters, boarding facilities, farms or research institutions
Theoretical lessons at a vocational school (Berufsschule) covering species-appropriate husbandry, biology, hygiene, safety at work etc.
Final exam officially recognised by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK)
There are three official specialisation fields:
Tierheim und Tierpension (animal shelters and boarding facilities)
Forschung und Klinik (research and clinical settings)
Zoo (zoos and wildlife parks)
Feeding and daily care
Preparing and providing suitable food for each species
Making sure animals have enough water and eat properly
Keeping enclosures and surroundings clean and safe
Health monitoring
Observing behaviour to detect signs of illness, stress or injury
Assisting veterinarians during examinations, treatments and minor procedures
Training and enrichment
Supporting animal training, especially in zoos or show settings
Creating enrichment activities to stimulate animals mentally and physically
Managing enclosures and housing
Cleaning and maintaining cages, enclosures and stables
Designing and adjusting environments to meet natural needs (climbing structures, hiding places, water areas, etc.)
Documentation
Recording health, feeding and weight data
Keeping track of special observations and individual care plans
Zoos and wildlife parks
Animal shelters and animal welfare organisations
Boarding kennels and breeding facilities
Research centres and veterinary clinics
Facilities with show or training animals
Genuine love of animals and a lot of patience
Good physical fitness and willingness to do physically demanding work, often in shifts
Strong observation skills
High sense of responsibility and careful work
Good communication with colleagues, visitors and animal owners
Promotion to team leader, section or unit supervisor
Further training as Tierpflegemeister/in (master-level animal keeper)
Specialisation in animal training, behaviour or breeding
Further studies in animal science, biology or veterinary-related fields
