How is the training organised?

  • Dual vocational training (Ausbildung) with a duration of 3 years

  • Combination of:

    • Theoretical lessons at a vocational school (Berufsschule) covering species-appropriate husbandry, biology, hygiene, safety at work etc.

  • Final exam officially recognised by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK)

There are three official specialisation fields:

  1. Tierheim und Tierpension (animal shelters and boarding facilities)

  2. Forschung und Klinik (research and clinical settings)

  3. Zoo (zoos and wildlife parks)


Typical daily tasks

Feeding and daily care

  • Preparing and providing suitable food for each species

  • Making sure animals have enough water and eat properly

  • Keeping enclosures and surroundings clean and safe

Health monitoring

  • Observing behaviour to detect signs of illness, stress or injury

  • Assisting veterinarians during examinations, treatments and minor procedures

Training and enrichment

  • Supporting animal training, especially in zoos or show settings

  • Creating enrichment activities to stimulate animals mentally and physically

Managing enclosures and housing

  • Cleaning and maintaining cages, enclosures and stables

  • Designing and adjusting environments to meet natural needs (climbing structures, hiding places, water areas, etc.)

Documentation
