Increase of the Grundrente: How to boost your pension in retirement
1. What is the Grundrente?
The Grundrente (basic pension supplement) is an automatic annual top-up to the statutory old-age pension. It targets people who have worked for many years (33–35 years or more) with low earnings, roughly 30–80 % of average German income (according to analyses such as oecd.org, hermoney.de).
2. Who is entitled?
You may qualify if:
-
You have at least 33 years of “Grundrentenzeiten” (qualifying periods), including:
-
insured employment,
-
child-raising periods,
-
care for dependent relatives,
-
certain rehabilitation or long illness periods.
-
-
Your average income during these years was between 30–80 % of the national average (currently roughly 1,262 € to 3,366 € gross per month, t-online.de).
You do not need to apply separately – eligibility is checked automatically by the Deutsche Rentenversicherung (German Pension Insurance).
3. How is the supplement calculated?
The supplement depends on the number of qualifying insurance years (33–35 years):
-
From 35 years upwards:
you receive the full supplement; low-earning pension points can be upgraded up to 0.8 pension points per year. -
Between 33 and 35 years:
you receive a pro-rated supplement (e.g. about 0.4 points at 33 years, rising up to 0.8).
The final amount is then multiplied by:
-
an adjustment factor of 0.875, and
-
the current pension point value (for 2024: 39.32 €/point, bmas.de).
4. How much is it usually worth?
-
On average, the Grundrente adds around 86 €/month to the pension (deutsche-rentenversicherung.de).
-
In some cases, it can reach up to about 241 €/month for people whose 35 years of low earnings are fully upgraded (bmas.de).
5. Does my current income affect it?
Yes, the actual payment depends on a monthly income test:
For single pensioners:
| Situation | Effect on the Grundrente |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,438 €/month | Full supplement is paid |
| 1,438–1,840 €/month | 60 % of the excess income is deducted |
| Above 1,840 €/month | The supplement is cancelled completely |
For married couples, the thresholds are higher (around 2,243 € and 2,646 € per month) but follow the same logic.
6. What about social protection and other benefits?
The supplement is not always fully counted as income for benefits such as:
-
Wohngeld (housing benefit),
-
Grundsicherung (basic income support in old age).
There are special rules and partial exemptions (e.g. dgb.de), so the Grundrente is partly protected and not completely offset by a reduction in other social benefits.
7. Do I have to apply?
No.
As of January 2021, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung activates the Grundrente automatically for eligible retirees and sends them a notification. Retroactive payments for past months can also be included.
