Germany’s federal government announced that the National University Medicine Network (NUM), founded during the COVID‑19 pandemic in April 2020, will now receive permanent federal funding as a cornerstone of health research.
The decision was made by the Joint Science Conference (GWK). The aim is to secure long‑term clinical research, improve diagnostic and therapeutic methods, and strengthen preparedness for future health crises in cooperation with international partners.
Research Minister Dorothee Bär described the funding as an important signal for science. The network enables standardized datasets, biological samples, and study protocols, facilitating multinational studies and meta‑analyses.
NUM brings together the expertise of all 37 university medical institutions in Germany.
