The German Defense Ministry announced that dozens of non‑essential troops were withdrawn from the Erbil base in northern Iraq due to rising tensions between the United States and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program.
Only essential personnel remain to maintain operational capability, with the decision taken in coordination with international partners.
According to Der Spiegel, German soldiers were flown to Jordan on February 18, 2026, after US President Donald Trump threatened Iran with a military strike.
Earlier in February, the Bundeswehr had already withdrawn some troops from Erbil, stating that the situation was under close monitoring.
