German study: Racism infiltrates government institutions

A new study by the Institute for Social Cohesion has revealed that racism is present within German government institutions at levels comparable to its prevalence among the general population.

Researchers noted that this form of racism rarely appears as overt hostility, but rather manifests subtly through daily decisions, bureaucratic routines, and organizational culture, affecting refugees and minorities.

The study, funded by the Interior Ministry with six million euros, surveyed around 13,000 employees across four federal institutions: the police, customs, the Federal Employment Agency, and the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.

In addition, researchers observed daily life inside these offices and analyzed documents. Religious sociologist Gert Pickel from Leipzig, who supervised the study, said: “A study of this scale has never been conducted in Germany. For the first time, we as an independent research network have been granted access to state institutions to examine racism.”
