Rubio reconciles with Europe: “We made mistakes together”

Publication date: 2026-02-14

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told the Munich Security Conference that Washington’s destiny is tied to Europe and that the US does not intend to abandon the transatlantic alliance.

He declared: “Our homeland may be in the Western Hemisphere, but we will always be Europe’s children.”

Rubio acknowledged major mistakes of past decades, citing what he called a “climate cult” that led to flawed energy policies and open-border approaches that triggered unprecedented migration.

“We made these mistakes together,” he said, adding that while the US is ready to make changes alone, it prefers to do so with “our European friends.”

He emphasized the need for a renewed alliance with Europe focused on shared interests and a redefined economic and political vision.

Rubio also criticized the United Nations, saying it had played “virtually no role” in resolving conflicts, and called for reform of international institutions.
