Publication date: 2026-02-13

Wolfgang Ischinger, chair of the Munich Security Conference, warned that the world is experiencing unprecedented turmoil, with bloody wars in Europe and beyond. He stressed that the rules-based international order is undergoing real “destruction,” placing the global community at a decisive crossroads.

In his opening speech at the 62nd conference, he explained that this year’s report titled “Under Destruction” reflects the scale of unprecedented challenges facing international security and relations among states.

He described the current phase as a difficult test for transatlantic relations but expressed relief at their continued resilience. He also welcomed the U.S. delegation of more than 40 bipartisan members of Congress, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
