A controversy erupted in Europe after condemnations were based on truncated quotes from UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese. The case highlighted how fake content can shape official positions of major states.
A cut video of her remarks at the Al Jazeera Forum triggered the wave, starting with French MP Caroline Yadan calling for her UN mandate to be revoked, followed by 53 Renaissance MPs signing a letter to the French Foreign Ministry.
France, Germany, and Italy’s foreign ministries joined in, with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot calling her remarks “outrageous.” However, the full transcript revealed her words were distorted: she referred to the “common enemy of humanity” as the system preventing accountability for Israel, not Israel itself.
Albanese denied the claims on X, while a French lawyers’ association announced plans to sue MPs who spread her remarks “deceptively.”
