Political Debate in Germany After Suspension of Migrant Access to Integration Courses

Publication date: 2026-02-12

Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) announced in February 2026 that it would suspend issuing new permits for participation in integration courses, citing budgetary pressures.

The measure affects asylum seekers with pending cases, holders of temporary residence permits, as well as some refugees from Ukraine and EU citizens who previously had access to the courses.

The decision sparked strong criticism. The SPD’s integration commissioner said, “the final word has not yet been spoken.” The Greens and the Left also warned that halting these courses could delay migrants’ entry into the labor market and increase long-term social costs.
