The Prime Minister of Saxony has sparked debate by suggesting that unemployed citizens should perform simple community tasks—such as shoveling snow or sweeping leaves in public parks—in return for receiving government benefits.
He argued that the measure would foster social responsibility and demonstrate that state support should be linked to contributions to society.
Opposition parties and trade unions criticized the proposal, warning that it could amount to “forced labor through the back door.”
Supporters, however, believe it could help integrate unemployed individuals into society and ease the burden on municipalities.
