As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, the German government has clarified its position regarding calls to boycott the tournament over U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies.

Government spokesman Steffen Mayer stated on Wednesday that boycotting the World Cup is “not the right way” to express opposition, emphasizing: “Political confrontations must take place in the political arena, and sports should remain sports.”

The announcement comes amid growing diplomatic tensions that had fueled debate over whether Germany might withdraw from the competition.
