Publication date: 2026-01-30

The oldest surviving Volkswagen Beetle, bearing serial number 26, has returned to public roads after an eight-year restoration.

German owner Traugott Grundmann rebuilt the car meticulously in his hometown of Hessisch Oldendorf, making it roadworthy again with certification from Germany’s TÜV authority.

The car’s engine produces just 23 horsepower, with a recommended top speed of 100 km/h.

Grundmann described the driving experience as “a true return to basics,” while admitting the car vibrates and becomes noisy above 80 km/h.
