Germany’s Federal Court of Justice (BGH) in Karlsruhe has issued a landmark ruling against racial and religious discrimination in housing.

The case centered on Humaira Wasim, a German employee of Pakistani origin, who in 2022 was denied a viewing by a real estate agency.

When she reapplied under the German alias “Julia Schneider,” she was immediately offered an appointment.

The court awarded her €3,000 in damages plus legal fees.

Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Ferda Ataman hailed the decision as a major step forward, stressing that victims now have a strong legal tool to defend their rights in the housing market.
