The Women’s Union within Germany’s CDU has submitted a proposal to the upcoming party congress, demanding a comprehensive ban on full-face coverings such as burqas and niqabs in public areas.
The initiative argues that such coverings hinder social integration, foster parallel societies, and obstruct law enforcement and government institutions from identifying individuals.
Supporters emphasize that similar bans have already been implemented in France, Belgium, and Austria, and upheld by courts including the European Court of Human Rights.
The proposal will be debated at the CDU’s federal congress at the end of February, sparking discussions on balancing religious freedom with security concerns.
