Germany and neighboring countries are meeting today at the North Sea Summit in Hamburg to push forward the expansion of offshore wind energy. Chancellor Friedrich Merz, hosting the third summit of its kind, declared that the North Sea should become “the largest reservoir of clean energy in the world.” Five heads of state and government, energy ministers, and business representatives are attending.
The summit aims to make offshore wind expansion more efficient and cost-effective through close cooperation across the North Sea region. The expected outcome is greater European energy independence and lower electricity costs. The summit also seeks to create better investment conditions, including cross-border planning and financing of offshore wind farms and related energy grids.
Additionally, the protection of energy infrastructure in the North Sea will be strengthened. Since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, hybrid attacks on Europe’s critical energy facilities have increased both on land and at sea.
