Heavy snowfall and freezing rain caused major traffic disruptions across Germany on Monday morning, with reports of numerous accidents in Saxony, Brandenburg, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Deutsche Bahn announced delays and cancellations in long-distance train services, affecting southern Germany as well as connections to and from Berlin, Hamburg, and Hanover.
In Berlin, tram services were suspended due to frozen overhead power lines, while other public transport services faced restrictions. Southwestern Germany saw up to 25 centimeters of snow on Sunday evening.
The German Weather Service issued severe warnings for black ice in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, and northern Bavaria. Near Weinsberg in Baden-Württemberg, 15 to 20 vehicles were stranded in snow overnight. Weather conditions are expected to remain harsh, with continued snowfall and freezing temperatures.
In the United States, the National Weather Service warned of snow, ice, and freezing rain threatening around 180 million people. The storm path stretches from the southern Rockies to New England. Forecasters predicted 30 to 60 centimeters of snow from Washington through New York to Boston.
