German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described Russia’s war against Ukraine as “barbaric” and called for intensified pressure on Moscow. “This war will only end when Russia sees no benefit in continuing it and when the cost of its madness becomes unbearable,” he said in Berlin.
On the fourth anniversary of the invasion, Merz warned that President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions extend beyond Ukraine, citing threats and provocations in the Baltic states, the Baltic Sea, and hybrid attacks across Europe, including Germany.
Merz pledged continued support for Ukraine, noting that Germany has provided nearly €40 billion in bilateral civilian aid and more than €50 billion in military assistance since the war began.
