Germany: 96 Geckos Found in “Unbearable” Conditions – 32 Dead, Owner Charged with Animal Protection Law Violation

Publication date: 2026-02-20

Veterinary authorities in Unterfranken, Bavaria discovered 96 geckos inside the home of a reptile breeder, with 32 of them already dead.

The Hassberge district office reported that initial findings suggest the reptiles died from hunger and thirst. Officials described the conditions as “unbearable,” noting that the animals’ specific needs were not met.

Surviving geckos were transferred to temporary shelters, while the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety will conduct examinations to determine the exact causes of death.

Authorities stated that the owner refused to cooperate and insulted veterinary staff and police officers. He now faces charges of violating the Animal Protection Law and will be required to cover the costs of examinations and care for the rescued animals.
