Publication date: 2026-02-20

The death of a 36‑year‑old ticket inspector in Rhineland‑Palatinate, following a violent attack by a 26‑year‑old passenger without a ticket, has shocked Germany. The suspect is currently in pre‑trial detention.

State Premier Alexander Schweitzer called for a standardized Deutschlandticket with a personal photo to ease ticket checks and reduce conflicts. He also urged stronger security measures, including staffing trains with two employees instead of one and equipping staff with bodycams.

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schneider expressed openness to reducing ID checks on trains, arguing that more flexible procedures could lower violent incidents by up to 18%.

The incident reignited debate over the safety of railway staff and the effectiveness of proposed measures.
