Germany: Mosque opens in Thuringia after 10 years of planning and protests

Publication date: 2026-02-20

The Ahmadiyya community inaugurated its first mosque in Erfurt, Thuringia, after more than a decade of planning and construction, which had been delayed by local protests and opposition.

The mosque is considered the first Islamic house of worship in the state with a traditional dome and minaret. Construction costs amounted to about €1.4 million, funded entirely by community donations.

Since 2016, the project faced protests, vandalism, and hostility, with some craftsmen refusing to participate due to fear of backlash.

At the opening ceremony, spokesman Mohammad Suleiman described the mosque as “a house for dialogue and openness,” emphasizing its role in fostering understanding and coexistence. Local politicians highlighted the importance of religious freedom and tolerance in German society.
