Germany: Iraqi arrested at Berlin airport over multimillion-euro vault heist

German federal police arrested a 38-year-old Iraqi upon arrival from Ankara at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, wanted in connection with a major vault robbery.

  • He is suspected of involvement in the daring November 19, 2022 break-in at a former private bank in Charlottenburg, Berlin.

  • The gang stole 996 luxury watches worth about €14 million, plus jewelry, cash, and valuables from 295 vaults totaling €31 million.

  • After the theft, they set the site on fire and sprayed contents with extinguishers to erase evidence.

  • In 2024, four men were sentenced to between 3.5 and 8 years in prison; a fifth was acquitted.

  • Prosecutors said some convicts were linked to the “Miri clan,” while the vault company’s former CEO played a key role due to debts.

  • The arrested suspect was brought before a judge in Berlin and placed in custody pending trial.
