German media: Syria asks Germany to delay refugee returns, warns of humanitarian crisis

A Syrian official urged Germany to be patient regarding refugee repatriation, warning that a large-scale return now could worsen the humanitarian situation.

  • Mohammed Yaqub al-Amr, head of the consular affairs department at Syria’s Foreign Ministry, told Focus magazine that Syria still needs more time before it can properly host returnees.

  • He noted that thousands returning at once could end up in camps, as the government is currently focused on reconstruction.

  • His remarks came during the opening of Syria’s new consulate in Bonn.
