European warning: Food used as a weapon in hybrid warfare

 

EU Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen cautioned that reliance on external food supplies could expose Europe to risks of food being weaponized in hybrid conflicts.

• Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Hansen said: “Russia considers grain its second oil (…) we need to reduce our dependence on it.”

• He stressed that relying on food imports from Russia is “dangerous.”

• The remarks came during a panel on resilience against the use of food as a weapon.
