French President Emmanuel Macron told the Munich Security Conference that Europe must become a geopolitical power since the Russian threat will not disappear. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz revealed that Berlin has begun talks with Paris on a European nuclear deterrent.
Macron called for long-term strategic thinking, including integrating French nuclear deterrence into the EU’s future security architecture. He emphasized the need to show strength and perseverance regarding Ukraine, insisting that Europe must learn to act as a geopolitical force.
He stressed that Europe will still have to confront potential Russian aggression even if the war in Ukraine is settled, warning against short-term deals that fail to address fundamental issues.
