German Chancellor Friedrich Merz opened the 62nd Munich Security Conference with a keynote speech on foreign policy, marking his first appearance as head of government at the world’s most important security policy gathering. His positions on how to deal with U.S. President Donald Trump’s power politics were highly anticipated.

Merz reiterated his call for a strong European policy. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stressed: “In times of global turmoil and the return of power politics, political reliability and commitment to a stable, rules-based international order are our greatest assets.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to deliver a speech Saturday morning, leading a delegation of more than 40 bipartisan members of Congress.

Organizers expect over 60 heads of state and government and around 100 foreign and defense ministers – more than ever before. Discussions will focus on transatlantic tensions, the Iran crisis, and the war in Ukraine, alongside demonstrations including protests against the Iranian government.
