A survey found that 68% of respondents in EU countries believe their nations are threatened under the current international situation, while 42% feel their personal safety is at risk.

Regarding defense investment, 32% said the EU has not taken sufficient steps, while 52% believe the EU can strengthen security and defense. Support for this view declined in Germany, France, and Italy.
The “Eurobarometer 574” flash survey was conducted online by the Brussels-based polling company Demoscopia between January 5 and 12, 2026, at the request of the European Commission.
