Publication date: 2026-02-12

A massive blaze broke out on Wednesday evening, February 11, 2026, in a 20-story residential building in Berlin’s Friedrichsfelde district, leaving at least one child dead and dozens injured, including women and children, according to local authorities.

The fire started in an apartment on the fourth floor on Dolgenseestraße and quickly spread due to heavy furnishings inside. When firefighters arrived, the apartment was fully engulfed and thick smoke had filled the building, complicating evacuation efforts.

Another child and a woman were taken to hospital and underwent resuscitation, while several residents suffered from smoke inhalation or injuries while escaping.

Around 170 firefighters and emergency responders participated in rescue operations. Many residents were evacuated, with some signaling for help from windows. About 20 apartments were rendered temporarily uninhabitable, forcing residents to move to nearby shelters or stay with relatives. The district office is working to provide alternative housing.

Police confirmed the building is not at risk of collapse, while investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
