Earthquakes Shake Northern Germany: Residents Report Tremors

Publication date: 2026-02-12

Seismic monitoring stations in Germany recorded two consecutive earthquakes early Thursday in the Wesselhoffwed area of Lower Saxony, an unusual geographic occurrence for northern Germany, according to the National Seismological Institute.

The quakes measured 3.5 and 3.2 on the Richter scale. Residents in nearby villages and towns reported feeling the tremors for several seconds. No injuries or major damage have been reported so far.

The incidents sparked widespread discussion on social media. Seismologists explained that such tremors, while rare in the region, are possible.

Experts noted that these quakes are typically caused by minor movements in geological layers beneath the earth’s surface and usually end without further developments.

Local authorities issued safety advice to residents, urging them to avoid heavy objects and to secure pictures and shelves safely in their homes in case of additional tremors.
