Prosecutors in Magdeburg have charged a 57-year-old Syrian man with murder after a woman was fatally stabbed in the Neue Neustadt district last September.
Reports indicate that the victim and suspect knew each other and are said to have children together. The man had previously been convicted of a sexual offense.
The regional court in Magdeburg will decide whether to accept the indictment and begin trial proceedings. A court spokesperson noted the urgency, as the suspect has been in pre-trial detention since October. German law stipulates that detention without a judicial ruling cannot exceed six months.
Witnesses said the suspect was unfit for questioning for several weeks after the incident, as he had injured himself and was treated in intensive care. Around 60 people attended a vigil in memory of the victim following the crime.
