Germany’s police union has raised concerns over the growing number of missing or stolen firearms, many of which end up on the black market. According to the Federal Interior Ministry, by the end of 2025 a total of 47,335 firearms were registered as lost or stolen in the National Firearms Register – nearly double the figure recorded in 2018.
Of these, 38,277 were reported lost and 9,058 stolen. In 2018, the total stood at 24,531, including 19,282 lost and 5,249 stolen.
Police union deputy chief Manuel Ostermann described the numbers as “worrying,” stressing that unscrupulous criminals are active in this field, breaking into homes and opening safes to steal firearms.
