In Oberpfaffenhofen, Bavaria, Germany is constructing a new mission control center dedicated to future lunar and Mars expeditions.
The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is building the Human Exploration Control Center (HECC), which will oversee both manned and robotic missions to the Moon and Mars, in cooperation with European partners to strengthen Europe’s spaceflight autonomy.
The Free State of Bavaria is funding the project with €58 million, while DLR is contributing an additional €20 million from federal and state resources.
HECC will be part of the German Space Operations Center (GSOC), drawing on experience gained from operating the Columbus module of the International Space Station. Plans include a building complex for up to 200 staff, multifunctional rooms, clean rooms, and high-security areas.
The center will also support Europe’s contribution to the lunar Gateway station, a cornerstone of NASA’s Artemis program. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2028, with operations starting in 2030.
