CDU Parliamentary Leader Calls for Deportation of Syrians from Germany, Except Permanent Residents

Jens Spahn, head of the CDU parliamentary group in Germany, has called for the deportation of Syrian refugees from Germany, except those holding permanent residency.

Speaking to the newspaper “Bild” after a trip to Israel, Cyprus, and Lebanon, Spahn said Syrians without permanent residence permits “should leave Germany within a reasonable timeframe.”

He stressed that differences in living standards between Syria and Germany are not a valid reason to remain. Return, he argued, must begin alongside reconstruction efforts to provide Syrians with realistic prospects for a dignified life in their homeland.

Spahn also announced plans to cooperate more closely with Turkey and Lebanon to encourage returns, noting that these countries, together with Germany, have hosted the largest numbers of Syrian refugees.
