Publication date: 2026-02-09

A trial has opened in Munich against a 27-year-old Syrian man accused of planning a large-scale terrorist attack in Bavaria.

Prosecutors say the suspect intended to attack German soldiers in the town of Hof during their lunch break using two machetes, aiming to kill as many as possible.

Investigators confirmed that the man had already purchased the weapons and believe he is motivated by radical Islamist ideology.

The case has drawn nationwide attention, as the Hof barracks is the only remaining Bundeswehr base in the Upper Franconia region.
