Authorities in Hamburg announced plans to reduce more than 10,000 places for refugee accommodation this year, mainly in hotels previously rented for that purpose. At the same time, several large centers will be closed, even as new facilities are being built.
New shelters are currently under construction on Tangstedter Landstraße in Hamburg-Nord and on Buchkoppel in Wandsbek, expected to provide around 800 additional places this year.
Meanwhile, hotel accommodations are being phased out and major centers shut down, including the facility at Schwarzenbergplatz in Harburg and another at Überseering in the city’s north. A shelter for women affected by violence in Altona was also closed, officially for renovation, sparking criticism from Left Party lawmakers who called the move a “breach of trust.”
Authorities also plan to close another women’s shelter in Eppendorf in July, intensifying debate over the city’s refugee housing policy, particularly regarding vulnerable groups.
