Jacqueline Bernhardt, Justice Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Left Party), has come under fire after allowing her son to skip school on the last day before winter holidays to travel with the family.
According to NDR, Bernhardt submitted an official request which the school approved. However, the state’s Education Ministry criticized the move, stressing that compulsory education applies equally to all parents and that starting holidays early is not a valid reason.
Bernhardt defended her decision, saying the family trip had been booked months in advance and the exemption was formally requested and approved.
The case sparked debate about whether politicians should adhere to the same rules imposed on ordinary citizens, especially regarding compulsory schooling.
