Mercedes CEO Warns of Economic Decline in Germany: “Germans Must Work More”

Publication date: 2026-02-08

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius has issued a stark warning about Germany’s economic trajectory, telling Der Spiegel magazine that Europe’s largest economy has been moving in the wrong direction for “about 10 to 15 years.”

He cautioned that years of stagnation are undermining competitiveness and fueling a political shift toward the far right. “If this trend is not reversed, then right-wing populists will emerge – and they have no solutions for anything,” Källenius said.

The Mercedes chief stressed that Germans must work harder and increase productivity to safeguard the country’s prosperity and industrial strength.
